Mapping of near-shore environments is difficult because sonar doesn’t work well in shallow water, and tidal changes near shoals & reefs make for dangerous operations.
Traditional bathymetric LiDAR cannot detect much of the intertidal zone due to depth resolution constraints, making change detection in navigation channels and sandbars after hurricanes or large storms difficult.
